Near East / Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 6th to 10th century CE. A beautiful handmade pottery jar of unique form with an applied discoid foot, circular base and shoulder enveloping a short, recessed columnar body, and a tiered slope leading to a lipped rim. Previously glazed in shades of deep blue and cream that remain in some areas, the vessel now boasts a marvelous sparkling iridescence. This dazzling item was likely used by a noble woman for holding jewelry or sweet floral oils for bathing. Size: 5" W x 2.75" H (12.7 cm x 7 cm)
