JOHN PETTICREW CLASSICAL TALL CASE CLOCK
JOHN PETTICREW CLASSICAL TALL CASE CLOCK
Item Details
Description
Corydon, Indiana, c. 1825, cherry and poplar. A fully developed classical case, with a broken-arch pediment, and the waist with four fully turned columns with carved capitals, the base with an arch flanked by columns with carved capitals, and resting on paw feet. Brass movement with sun-moon dial and floral spandresl. 101.5" high. Few Petticrew clocks are known and little is known about Petticrew, himself. He lived and worked in Corydon from the the time the city was the territorial or state capital (1813-1825) and died in 1830. He may have worked with local cabinetmakers, but also may have contracted with cabinetmakers in Lousivlle, Kentucky, or upriver in Cincinnati, Ohio. This clock was present in Jeffersonville, KY in the middle of the 20th century (based on the restored sun-moon dial's signature) so may well have been made for a Kentucky client. This clock later made its way down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, selling at Morton's Auctions Exchange in New Orleans in 1981. This lot is eligible for pick-up or furniture/freight shipping. If you need assistance with shipping, please contact us.
Condition
Dial has the original paint with crazing (see above for sun/moon dial info), retains weights and pendulum. The hood retains its original plinth (partially detached) and a replaced finial, there are glued repairs to the goosenecks, possibly early glass (small crack in upper-right corner), veneer cracks. The case has various veneer cracks and damage, there are two small pieces of molding detached but present, the door is presently locked but there is no key. PLEASE NOTE: WE DO NOT GUARANTEE THE WORKING ORDER OF CLOCKS.
