Description
Boston, MA, 1790-1810, mahogany and pine. Fretwork pediment, the case with quarter-fan inlays and quarter-columns with brass capitals and stop fluting, and with brass eagle-and-ball finials. The inside of the waist door records and extensive cleaning history back to the 19th century. 89.25" high (plus finials). Provenance: Richard Don (Phoenixville, PA). Condition
The dial has its original paint, there is some inpainting, including part of the signature, but is mostly original, retains weights, pendulum, and key. The hood has the original fretwork (with a couple of minor glued cracks), replaced glass, finials are period. The case has an old finish, some veneer cracks and damage, the proper right corner of the base has the worst visible damage (with the proper left corner with much less), the feet and blocking have age and are attached, in part, by hide glue, but also have round nails (please see photos).
