Description
Pre-Columbian, South/Central Coast Peru, Huari (Wari) culture, ca. 600 to 1000 CE. A hand-built pottery jug of a sizable form with a flat base, a tall apple-shaped body with a rounded shoulder, a tapered neck, a thick rim, and a loop handle arching between neck and shoulder. The highly burnished exterior bears cream and beige panels separated by a thin black stripe, and an abstract anthropomorphic face is illustrated on the neck. The expressive countenance presents with almond-shaped eyes, a bulbous nose above pursed lips, vertical facial stripes painted in red, and a three-panel pectoral collar below the puffy cheeks. An intriguing example of Huari figurative pottery! Size: 6.25" W x 8.7" H (15.9 cm x 22.1 cm)
