Description
**Originally Listed At $500**
East Asia, Japan, Edo to Meiji Period, ca. mid to late 19th century CE. A beautiful wood carving of Sho Kannon the Japanese version of Guanyin or Avalokiteshvara, the sacred Bodhisattva of compassion. Sho Kannon is depicted as either male or female, and here the ambiguous being is seated in full lotus position with hands placed serenely on his lap. The robes pool and crease in highly naturalistic folds, cascading from head to ankles. The tranquil visage has a third eye carved into the brow, elegantly arched brows, heavy lids, a petite nose, pursed lips, and rounded chin. His hair is piled into an ushnisha atop his head, and long ears frame either side of his head, representing his rejection of the material life and earthly pleasures. The surface is lacquered in a dark brown with some wear to pigment that creates a lovely, weathered appearance throughout. Size: 4.25" L x 3.75" W x 6.25" H (10.8 cm x 9.5 cm x 15.9 cm)
Provenance: private New Jersey, USA collection
