Description
***Auction Highlight*** 1849-d Dahlonega Gold Liberty Half Eagle $5 Graded ms61 details By SEGS. HIGHLIGHT OF THE ENTIRE AUCTION - Up for Auction is The 1849-D Dahlonega $5 Gold Half Eagle. Variety 25-S, the usually seen variety with the top of the D mintmark enclosing a triangular shape against the lower olive branch and the tip of the fletching's. More than $225,000 in domestic gold was deposited at the Dahlonega Mint in 1849, more than 92% of all national deposits. The bulk of the gold was coined into half eagles, a mintage of 39,036 pieces, with gold dollars and quarter eagles making up the balance. Most 1849-D half eagles are found well-circulated, usually down to lower AU or XF grades. This Mint State example offers excellent eye appeal and a nice bold strike on khaki-gold surfaces that display top-notch luster. Scattered small contact marks account for the grade, but few are overt. I have included another ma61 for your comparison.
