Description
Santo Domingo necklace highlighting a "shell over-lay" pendant with multi-stone and sterling silver accents. Pendant is strung with turquoise heishi. Santo Domingo pueblo artists and jewelers have long specialized in the art of shell over-lay and have perfected the craft. This example is an earlier work c.1950-60's, and demonstrates the simplicity yet complicated art. The pendant features natural materials--turquoise, coral and white howlite. The arrangement of the geometric pattern is believed to represent patterns often featured on prehistoric pueblo pottery. Hallmark (cannot identify) on sterling hanger.
