Description
1860 Carvalho Fremont Expedition Mormon Utah Voyages Travel & Adventure West
Solomon Carvalho was an artist who is best remembered for his role on the Fremont Expedition in 1853. In search for railroad routes through the Rocky Mountains, Carvalho kept a log of his adventures which were printed in his book ‘Incidents of Travel’. According to Wagner-Camp,
“Carvalho was an artist accompanying John C. Fremont's expedition of 1853 to explore the Rockies for a possible railroad route. He left New York in September 1853 and arrived in Parowan, Utah Territory in 1854. There the party split up and Carvalho took a southern route, reaching Los Angeles by way of Cajon Pass and San Bernardino on June 9.”
This work also includes a section devoted entirely to Mormonism, covering notable Mormon sermons, polygamy, and speeches by Brigham Young.
