Description
Bottle recovered from the Shipwreck of the S.S. Republic. Measures 14" high. Comes with wood display base, Odyssey Marine Exploration CD and COA. The SS Republic was a sidewheel steamship that was launched in 1853 as the SS Tennessee. At the outbreak of the Civil War the ship was used as a blockade runner by the Confederacy as the CSS Tennessee. It was re-captured by the United States in April 1862. It was renamed the USS Tennessee form 1862-1864 and then the USS Mobile form 1864-1865. After the war it returned to civilian service as the SS Republic. On October 25, 1865 it was sunk in a hurricane off the coast of Georgia. At the time it was carrying a cargo of $400,00 in coins mostly $10 and $20 gold pieces, along with silver coins. The wreck was salvaged in 2003, and about 1/3 of the gold and silver coin cargo was recovered. This is an authentic bottle recovered from the ship.
