Description
A REPUBLIC OF TEXAS $100 MUNICIPAL SCRIP ISSUED BY THE SABINA COUNTY COMPANY TO SAMUEL HOUSTON, SAN AUGUSTINE, JULY 1, 1839, hand inscribed ink on engraved paper, signed by David Brown, Secretary, and Samuel Stevens (attributed), President, in the upper corners the note endorsed as a "Real Estate Pledge," with "Stock $250,00," flanking a figure of an indigenous figure, probably a representation of an Atakapa tribesman, he holds a recurve bow with quiver and feather arrows at his feet overlooking a lake, railroads, a church, and rising architecture in landscape hung with a six-pointed star issuing rays, the sides of the note with scrolling rinceaux. 3 7/8" x 8 3/8" Provenance: Estate of Dr. Paul E. Shutts, Houston, Texas.
Condition
Some losses, darkened acid biting, creases, backed, ink faded, overall in good condition, wear commensurate with age and use.
