Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Panama, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. A charming pottery rattle in the form of a bird. The avian instrument boasts a bulbous body, a petite head with a short beak and a pointed crest feather, and a flared tail, all sitting upon 3 feet. Adorned in black and cream pigments atop a burnt sienna-hued ground, the adorable animal is embellished with target-motif eyes, striated breast and tail feathers, a spiraling design on each wing, and a thick band around its neck. The base features 2 slits and the piece is filled with a small stone or bean, allowing it to make a fine rattling sound when shaken. Size: 2.5" L x 2.75" W x 3.5" H (6.4 cm x 7 cm x 8.9 cm)

Provenance: ex-Stein collection, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, USA, acquired prior to 2010
