WASHINGTON, George, President (1789-1797). Partially printed DS, stating that Lewis Morris (?), Esquire, Lieutenant Colonel in the late Army of the United States, is a member of the Society of Cincinnati. Mount Vernon, Virginia, 31 March 1787. Signed by H[enry] Knox, Secretary and G[eorge]. Washington, President. (ink a bit faded near the top of the document, Washington's signature fine) The Society of Cincinnati was formed in 1783 after the American Revolution by the officers of both France and America to promote knowledge and appreciation of he achievement of American independence, for "inculcating the Duty of laying down in Peace Arms assumed for public Defence." It is the nation's oldest patriotic organization.
