Description
Late 19th century Japanese bronze and wood kakhara - a Buddhist rattle used by a wandering monk or a pilgrim to scare off small creatures like snakes and insects, and thus prevent the carrier from stepping on them. Bronze top with 3 pairs of loose rings that produce the sound, nicely cast, very pleasant patina. Loosely fit on softwood handle to allow for shaking, old stable split along the handle. Total length 11 1/4 inches
