Pre-Columbian, Peru, Nazca culture, ca. 100 BCE to 800 CE. A well-preserved, hand-made, and stone burnished bird vessel with a brief spout gently rising from its back. The bird is beautifully painted in colorful sections of sienna and light orange. Its face features target-motif eyes, linear markings, and a parted beak completing an overall jubilant presence. Perhaps this example derived from Nazca's Monumental Strain - a period or phase showing naturalistic representations of animals - where birds like swallows, condors, and water birds were common. Later, Nazca art became more abstract and deviated almost completely from this kind of typology. Size: 6.5" L x 4.25" W x 6.65" H (16.5 cm x 10.8 cm x 16.9 cm)
