This outstanding cotton late 19th century red and white lattice crib quilt is hand pieced and hand quilted, with 1/2" lattice strips and a set-in white border. The miniature quilt was made for an infant who died in its first year of life, according to the included hand written provenance: "Quilted by Grandma Sophronia (sp.?) Jayne - for baby Porter Emory Dull in 1891. Born May 1890, died Feb. 1891." The quilt measures 39" X 39" and is in excellent condition, with the occasional light age spot and no wear. The quilt feels strong and sturdy overall. There are 1/2" grid and straight line designs quilted throughout at 7-8 stitches to the inch. The back is white, the hand stitched binding is the same solid red used in the interior, and the batting is thin. You can see cotton seed residue inside when you hold the quilt up to the light.
