PROVENANCE:
John Gorse (1945-2020) of Charleston, SC. A business entrepreneurs, private collectors. A retired as senior vice president for legal and regulatory affairs in 1981. After retirement he focused his efforts on revitalizing the local area and philanthropy. His entrepreneurial drive continually motivated him to privately invest in real estate ventures and many other businesses. In addition to his impressive business acumen, he was a man of artistic pursuits, collecting antiques, porcelains, oriental rugs, and artwork of many different genres.

Chinese Yuan or Early Ming Dynasty Blue & white Phoenix birds motif Porcelain Plate. The dish wall is finely round carved, with broad wide central interior, thick and large, raised on correspondence footed ring base. This plate has delicate with two phoenix birds over flowers blossom, foliage . Enclosed with scrolling interlocking ruyi and banded with arrays of tropical leaves patterns filled by auspicious ruyi. Blue and white porcelain in Chinese it is called Qing Hua Ci. It is the most important variety of China porcelain. It was originated in the Yuan Dynasty. Its color does not easily fade and durability is longer. It used cobaltous oxide as the colorant. Patterns were directly painted onto the inner body and burnt after glaze was applied on it. The white glaze is thick, smooth with contrast color. While the blue and white glaze used plain materials, elegant and pleasant.
The underside unglazed, revealed the pale-creme ground revealed and dark greyish brown spotted firing marks and edge-cut foot rim.
