Description
11th-14th century AD. A silver ring with D-section hoop engraved with X-motifs; segmented shoulders formed as stylised flowers with niello detailing; oval-shaped bezel with niello cross within a roundel; remains of gilding. See a specimen from Saint-Paul-lès-Durance, Cadarache, in Hadjadj, R., Bagues mérovingiennes: Gaule du Nord, Paris, 2007, for a similar style of ring. 2.86 grams, 20.57mm overall, 16.31mm internal diameter (approximate size British L, USA 5 3/4, Europe 11.24, Japan 10) (1"). Property of a gentleman from Vienna; from his private collection formed since 1970. The ring style betrays a strong Eastern Influence, and the possibility of production in the Eastern Roman Empire or Crusader State of Outremer cannot be excluded. This Eastern style was also widely diffused in the West after the Crusades. [No Reserve] For this specific lot, 5% import VAT is applicable on the hammer price
