Pre-Contact Inuit Bone, Wood, Stone, Iron, & Hide Tools
Item Details
Description
Native American, Northwestern United States, Alaska, Inuit & Yupik, Pre-Contact Period, ca. 15th to 18th century CE. An impressive collection of 44 bone, tooth, wood, stone, animal hide, iron, brass, and glass bead tools and instruments, all hand-crafted by arctic cultures. The bones are collected from walruses, whales, caribous, seals, wolves, bears, and native birds and fishes - all animals these people hunted and relied upon for life. These tools served as drill bits, scrapers, knife blades, projectile points for spears and harpoons, and fishing lures and hooks - all to aid in the hunting and preparing of animals. They show great signs of age, and a few display drilled holes for suspension or for hafting to handles. In a land covered with snow and ice most of the year, blubber rich animals were essential for survival and all parts were used - as demonstrated by these bone artifacts. All are mounted in a wooden frame and are ready to be displayed. Size (of largest): 18.25" L x 1.25" W (46.4 cm x 3.2 cm); Size (of mounting): 23.5" W x 32.25" H (59.7 cm x 81.9 cm)
