Description
**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Chiriqui, ca. 300 to 800 CE. A charming pottery vessel in the form of an owl presenting a bulbous body, a carinated shoulder, and a slender neck that slightly widens to form an owl head, all sitting upon a round yet stable base. The exterior walls of the delightful example are adorned with burnt orange and black pigments on a cream-hued ground in circular and castellated motifs. The rim is pointed in 2 sections to form the horns of the owl, while target-motif eyes sit just below flanking an applied, pointed beak. Size: 4.75" in diameter x 6" H (12.1 cm x 15.2 cm)
Provenance: ex-Ashland University Museum, Ashland, Ohio, USA, donated to Ashland University between July 1994 to December 1998

Condition
Repair and restoration to rim. Some light abrasions to areas. Otherwise, excellent with rich earthen deposits on interior and nice pigments throughout.
