Description
A collection of eight Civil War-era cartes de visites depicting Union Generals Ulysses S. Grant, George B. McClellan, and Ambrose Burnside. Expected age-related wear including toning, scattered stains, minor trimming, and former collectors' pencil or pen inscriptions, else very good to near fine. The average size is 2.5" x 4."
The lot is comprised of:
- Two cartes de visites depicting Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885)
The first cdv shows Grant in military uniform in profile with a partial C.D. Fredericks & Co. backstamp verso, currently hinged on a brown construction paper mount, isolated damage to bottom edge, unevenly trimmed bottom edge, measures 3.5" x 5" overall; and the second cdv, entitled "Grant in Peace," depicts the commander seated with a child and dog.
- Four cartes de visites depicting George B. McClellan (1826-1885)
"Major General G.B. McClellan," ca. 1862, by photographer R.W. Addis; a cdv depicting McClellan in 3/4 profile, from the New York photographic establishment of Charles K. Bill; "Genl. Geo. B. McClellan," ca. 1862, with "CA" backstamp verso; and a cdv depicting McClellan and his wife, Mary Ellen Marcy McClellan.
- Two cartes de visites depicting Ambrose Burnside (1824-1881)
The first cdv was published by E. Anthony from a Brady negative, depicting the commander in military uniform in a 3/4 length portrait, rounded corners, 2.375" x 4"; and the second is "Gen. Burnside," ca. 1861, published by D. Appleton & Co.
