Description
RUSSIAN NIELLO / ENGRAVED 0.875 SILVER OPEN SALTS, LOT OF THREE, comprising a larger example by Ivan Semenovich Gubkin of Moscow with remnants of gold-washed finish featuring an engraved and chased foliate band around the well with niello decoration, and two smaller examples by unidentified makers with each having engraved designs to exterior well and raised on three spherical feet. Larger example with maker's mark, an assayer's mark for Ivan Vasilyevich Avdeyev (active 1852-1862) with 1857 date mark, an "84" zolotniki mark for 0.875 silver fineness, and a Moscow city mark, other two each with a maker's mark and a Kokoshnik mark having "84" zolotniki for 0.875 silver fineness and a Kostroma regional assay mark. Total weight: 3.360 ozt. Larger circa 1857; other two first quarter 20th century. Larger example 1 5/8" H, 2 3/8" D rim.
Condition
Good to very good overall condition with wear, surface scratches, and other imperfections including bending, dents, and/or worn spots; larger example with some scattered losses to niello, gilt mostly worn off, and label adhered to base; two smaller examples with interior residue and probably as-made small holes to feet, one or both possibly originally having niello decoration.
