Description

Civil War Era Ambrotype with Two Tintypes - Ambrotype Pictured in Tintype!

A group of related Civil War-era images, including an encased ambrotype and two tintypes. In a rarely seen circumstance, the subjects in one of the tintypes are actually holding the ambrotype included in the lot. The images are as follows:

1. Quarter Plate Ambrotype, measuring 3.25" x 4.25", No place, undated. An image of two men, one dressed in a military uniform and the other in civilian clothes. On the inside of the case, beneath the image, is stamped "Wm Woodis" and "Co.F.23.R.Me.V." Housed in a Littlefield, Parsons & Co. thermoplastic case.

2. Ninth Plate Tintype, measuring 2" x 2.5", No place, undated. An image of the same man, dressed in his uniform. Possibly the aforementioned William Woodis.

3. Quarter Place Tintype, measuring 3.25" x 4.25", No place, undated. A unique image of two seated women, holding the ambrotype mentioned above. It is very possible that these were the wives of the two men photographed or some other relation.

There are minor imperfections to the images, with some blue staining at the bottom of the smaller tintype. Expected wear to the cases. See photographs for further condition details.

William Woodis was a 33-year-old resident of Paris, Maine, who enlisted in the Union Army in 1862. He was mustered into Company F of the 23rd Maine Infantry as a Private and served for just five months before being discharged for disability in February 1863.
