Description
Scarce and lovely original aquatint from Charles Hamilton Smith's "Costumes of the Army of the British Empire, according to the last regulations," published by Colnaghi and Company. "Heavy & Light Cavalry in Watering Order." British cavalry units normally took their horses from camp each morning to find water to drink before setting off on patrols or going into battle. Both horses shown here have their tails docked or trimmed to a shorter length, a practice adopted by British cavalry and German cavalry in British service. An exceedingly elusive original vintage aquatint (only examples found online were reproductions). An example of this plate is in the National Army Museum. Plate impression visible. Clean with tiny bit of toning to plate. Image size: 8 x 9.5 (10 x 14 paper).
