1885 SIOUX Indians 1ed History of Spirit Lake Massacre Abbie Gardner Captivity
In 1857, an unruly group of Santee Sioux attacked and slaughtered dozens of frontier settlers in Iowa. Near Okoboji and Spirit Lake, these tribal men took captive four young women, the most famous was Abbie Garner of whom numerous stories were eventually published. This story, published under the title “History of the Spirit Lake Massacre and Captivity of Miss Abbie Gardner” is considered the final captivity narrative and tells of the experiences being held hostage by the Sioux.
