Description
**Originally Listed At $600**
Central Asia, Nepal, ca. early 20th century CE. A fine collection of 5 beautiful, hand-carved wooden butter churn handles known as "ghurra" or "neti." Each ghurra consists of a ring for a churning rod to be inserted through. The rings all have nice signs of surface wear indicating these were used extensively to produce butter. Each churning handle consists of a thick body decorated with carved motifs and a smaller attachment hole on the opposite end, which is either drilled laterally through or formed by an integral loop that protrudes from the tip. Among the Ghurung and Magar peoples of western Nepal, butter churns are traditional gifts indicating interest in marriage between families. A wonderful patina envelops these! Size of largest: 13.75" L x 4.5" W (34.9 cm x 11.4 cm)
Provenance: ex-private Lakewood, Colorado collection acquired from New York, USA auction house
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
