Description
Manufactured by the Mills Novelty Co. of Chicago Illinois circa 1907. This is the only known example of the Illustrated Song Machine cylinder model to exist. It features a combination 12 card stereo viewer and a Columbia type BG cylinder phonograph to provide a sight and sound experience that was novel for it's time. Original finish oak cabinet on wood legs in very good condition. Original Mills Novelty Co. decal on left side of cabinet. Oak service access door on front has beautiful decal and original lock with replacement key. Very fancy curved cast iron front with curved glass window to view the phonograph has Mills name cast into it along with cherubs and an owl. Door is missing the lock. The marquee and title board are replacements. Retractable listening tubes have original gutta percha parts with replacement rubber tubing. The bottom cash drawer has a lock but no key. There is a souvenir catalog in the bottom drawer from the 1976 Globe Arizona Centennial along with some paperwork and saloon tokens that suggests that this machine may have come from there. Measures 49.5" tall without marquee, 19" wide, 21.5" deep. Add 26.5" for marquee. Howard extensively covers this machine on page 236 of the Columbia Phonograph Companion. It is also featured on page 123 of Discovering Antique Phonographs 1877-1929.
