1700 Artificial Clock Maker Watches Horology Derham Hooke Mechanics PROVENANCE
William Derham was a 17th-century horologist best known for this treatise on clocks and watch making. The Artificial Clock-Maker is a survey on the history of timepieces including the inventions and contributions of Robert Hooke. Derham also includes notes on clock springs and gears including improvements to Tyco Brahes timepiece pendulum.
This work was gifted to one, Paymaster Captain F. Harrison Smith from Princess “Victoria Milford Haven” as described by the included note.

Princess Victoria Alberta Elizabeth Mathilde Marie of Hesse and by Rhine (1863–1950), later Victoria Mountbatten, Marchioness of Milford Haven, was the eldest daughter of Louis IV, Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine, and Princess Alice, daughter of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and Prince Albert.
The letter is addressed to Paymaster Captain F[rancis] Harrison Smith, a royal navy officer who was promoted to the Most Honourable Order of the Bath as a Knight Commander in 1919.
