Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A fine pottery vessel in the form of the head of a feline, perhaps a jaguar, presenting a spherical body and narrow neck that flares out and then inwards to a circular rim, all sitting upon a flat base. Enveloped in a deep black glaze, the ancient creature exhibits a stylized visage with generously lidded, almond-shaped eyes, a small, raised nose, incised whiskers, and a sizeable mouth held open to expose 2 rows of sharp fangs. A lovely example! Size: 6.25" in diameter x 8.5" H (15.9 cm x 21.6 cm)
Provenance: ex-Ashland University Museum, Ashland, Ohio, USA, donated to Ashland University between July 1994 to December 1998
