Item Details

Description

One of Johnson's first and most desirable issues of this great map of North America. Features an extremely interesting transitional period of the United States shortly after the outbreak of the Civil War. One of the very best U. S. maps produced by Johnsonâ€™s company. It shows the United States when it had some of the most interesting territorial borders: Nevada has been newly created from the western portion of a very â€œplump” Utah. Colorado has also been created from another portion of Utah and the upper portion of New Mexico Territory. The Territory of Washington has just gained the eastern portion of Oregon Territory, giving it an inverted "L" shape; and the proposed (or Confederate) territory of Arizona is shown in the southern part of New Mexico. Perhaps most interestingly, â€œArizona” is in outline letters indicating that this is a temporary territorial situation. Map depicts railroads (both completed and proposed), the Pony Express Route, and U.S. Mail routes. Also shows the locations of the major Indian tribes. Published 1862 by Johnson and Ward in their New Illustrated Steel Plate Family Atlas. Excellent condition with a thin and light water stain at top edge and a tiny bit of light soiling. Great color and a very nice ink impression. 16.5 x 21.75
