Description
Set of 10 vintage cobalt blue porcelain tea or coffee serving pieces: 3 cups with 3 saucer, 2 plates, and 2 platters, Salem China Company, Century Pattern, gold filigree on dark cobalt blue with flowers in the center, crackled glaze, 1940s. The plates and saucers are marked "Century by Salem. Made in U.S.A. Warranted 23 karat Encrusted Gold." The pieces have imprinted number indicating year code [used by Salem for a short time in the 1940s-50s].
The platters are 10" [25.3cm] across; the plates are 7" [17.8cm] across, the saucers are 5.3/4" [14.6cm]; the cups are 2.1/2" [6.3cm] deep and 3.1/2" [8.9cm] across at the top; crackled glaze, no chips, no hairlines, no repairs, a little rim wear, very good condition.
The Salem China Company was located in Salem, Ohio in Columbiana County, northwest of East Liverpool. It was founded in 1898. By 1930, the pottery was firing 25,000 pieces per day and at the height of production employed over 500 people. Salem China stopped manufacturing wares in 1967 and was reorganized into a sales and service company. Beginning in 1968, Salem was exclusively a distribution and sales business.
Many of the distinctive shapes from the 1930s and 1940s were created by designer Vicktor Schreckengost. Some of the more collectible lines today are Tricorne -- an Art Deco, triangle shape from the 1930s, and Free Form -- a modern design from the late 1940s. Other popular lines include Symphony, New Yorker, Heirloom, and Century.
