At its peak, the Gupta Empire controlled most of the Subcontinent, and is today considered the apex of Hindu civilization. This piece, likely a frieze or statue fragment, has many characteristics placing it within or not too distant from the Gupta historical radius. One feature common to all Gupta sandstone statuary is rarity. Gupta or not, this most uncommon offering is extraordinarily fine. Found at a Southern estate filled from floor to roof tiles with great antiques, it stands approximately 5.5" tall.
