Item Details
Description
Ancient Greece, Mycenaean Period, Late Bronze Age II, ca. 1450 to 1200 BCE. A charming example of a hand-built pottery stirrup jar with a spherical body, a sloped shoulder, a pair of handles arching away from a false central spout, and a functional spout with a flared rim on the front, all resting atop a petite discoid foot. The cream-ground vessel is decorated with bands of concentric lines in red pigment across the body, vertical frets surrounding the shoulder, solid areas of pigment on the handles, and concentric circles atop the false spout. A lovely example from the ancient Mycenaeans! Size: 3.4" W x 3.7" H (8.6 cm x 9.4 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-Dr. Edward D. Joseph collection, purchased in Athens, Greece in January 1972
