Carte de visite photograph of a bust view of a Civil War General Charles P. Stone wearing uniform with brigadier general shoulder straps. Image presents backmark of Charles D. Fredericks, Broadway, New York. Carte image presents excellent tones with some bumping at corners of carte. Charles Pomeroy Stone (1824-1887) United States Army officer, civil engineer, and surveyor. He fought in the Mexican?American War, earning two brevet promotions. Stone was a brigadier general at the Battle of Ball's Bluff in October 1861 and was blamed for the Union defeat and death of political/military leader U.S. Senator Edward D. Baker which resulted in his arrest and imprisonment for almost six months without trial or charges. He resigned shortly after later becoming a general in the Egyptian Army after the Civil War. He would return to the United States and oversaw the construction of the base of the Statue of Liberty.
