Description
Carte de visite photograph of a knees up seated view of Surgeon Anthony Eugene Stocker wearing uniform with major's shoulder straps and holding kepi on knee. Carte presents autographed inscription at lower obverse "Anthony E. Stocker MD, Surg. USV"". Image presents backmark of Gutekunst, Arch St. Philadelphia. Carte image presents excellent tones. Anthony Eugene Stocker (1819-1897) obtained his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1840. During the Civil War his service included appointment as Major and Surgeon in US Volunteers on August 3, 1861 with the Army of the Potomac, 2nd Brigade of General McCalls Division. He was attached to the 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, 1st Corps Army of the Potomac and then with the Department of the Rappahannock to May 1862. Stocker was then made Medical Director of the 3rd Division 5th Corp until 30 June 1862, when wounded in the right wrist by bullet fragments in the Battle of New Market Cross Roads. He was surgeon in charge of the Field Hospital at Harrison Landing and was the last officer to leave when it was evacuated. He then had service including charge of the Hospital at Craney Island, Virginia, inspection duty in the Department of Virginia from November 5, 1862 to January 5, 1863, charge of Chesapeake General Hospital, Fortress Monroe to October 14, 1863. He was then made Medical Director, District of Key West, FL until December 8, 1863 and subsequently made Medical Director of the District of Key West and Tortugas, FL until November 1864 and there contracted Yellow Fever. He was then placed in charge of Prisoners Hospital, Elmira, NY until mustered out. Brevet Lt. Colonel US Volunteers 1 Jun 1865. Honorably discharged 15 Sep 1865.
