Carte de visite photograph of full standing view of both Prince Philippe d'Orleans, Count of Paris (on left) and his brother Robert-Philippe-Louis-Eugene-Ferdinand d'Orleans, duc de Chartres (on right) as Union officers wearing uniforms with each holding swords. Carte has ink printed title on lower obverse "Duc de Chartres" and "Comte de Paris" (of note is that this is reversed as to identified subject). Image presents backmark of E. Anthony, New York from Brady negative. Carte image presents excellent tones with some slight edge bumping to carte and small ink streak near Phillipe's head. Prince Philippe d'Orleans, Count of Paris (1838-94) was a Union army officer in the American Civil War. He was the grandchild of Louis-Philippe, duc d'Orleans and king of the French from 1830 to 1848. Phillipe served under General George B. McClellan in the Army of the Potomac particularly thru the Peninsular campaign. Philippe resigned his commission in 1862. Philippe returned to England in 1864 and wrote the seven-volume set "Histoire de la guerre civile en Amerique". Robert-Philippe-Louis-Eugene-Ferdinand d'Orleans, duc de Chartres (1840-1910) was a Union army officer in the American Civil War. He was the grandchild of Louis-Philippe, duc d'Orleans and king of the French from 1830 to 1848. Robert served under General George B. McClellan in the Army of the Potomac particularly thru the Peninsular campaign. Robert resigned his commission in 1862 and returned to England in 1863.
