Carte de visite photograph of a standing knees up view of a Civil War General James Shields wearing uniform with brigadier general shoulder straps and holding sword. Image presents backmark of Charles D. Fredericks, Broadway, New York. Carte image presents good tones with some bumping at edges of carte and a corner loss (5mm x 2mm) and lower right corner. James Shields (1806-1879) United States politician and Army officer. Shields is the only person to ever serve in the United States Senate from three different states. Shields commanded the 2nd Division of the V Corps, Army of the Potomac (subsequently part of the Army of the Shenandoah), during the Valley Campaign of 1862 and was wounded at the Battle of Kernstown on March 22, 1862.
