Item Details
Description
Two-page last will and testament written by Shaderack Williams of Madison, Kentucky in 1833. In this document, which at the top reads "In the name of God, amen," Williams divides his estate amongst his heirs, including many provisions which name enslaved people part of the estate. The most interesting of which is undoubtedly Williams' stipulation that his "negro man by the name of Frederick live with any of [his] children that he shall choose."

Williams was apparently not willing to free Frederick upon his death, but did allow him some agency in deciding his future.

Standard witness signatures and docket notes on verso.
