Description
Two Revolutionary War muster rolls, dated December 16th, 1776. Each enlisting soldiers from the Kingston, New Hampshire area, to serve in the American Army and fight in the Revolution under Mustermaster, Josiah Bartlett. Each document written in the hand of Josiah Bartlett and bearing the signatures of 34 men, two of which were struck through and removed.Josiah Bartlett was a founding father and New Hampshire statesman, as well as the state's first governor. A signer of the Articles of Confederation and the Declaration of Independence, he was the first asked to vote for the Declaration of Independence and the second to sign it, after the President of the Second Continental Congress, John Hancock.The first document: "We the Subscribers Do Each of us Severally acknowledge that we have Rec'd of Col. Josiah Bartlett Mustermaster of the men to be raised in his Regiment to Recruit the american army till the first Day of March next, ten Dollars being one months advance pay & fifty shillings as billeting money till we arrive at head quarters at or near New York. Rec'd by Each of us."The second document: "We the Subscribers Do hereby Inlist our Selves as Soldiers to Recruit the american army at or near New York till the first day of March next and do be under the Command of Colonel David Gilman & such other officers as shall be appointed over us."Signers: Joshua Eastman; William Richardson; Joshua Bagley; Timothy Heath; Richard Hart; Abraham Sanborn; Josef H.
