Description
Late 19th/Early 20th C. Photographs of Ex-Slaves & African Americans

A fabulous group of four images of ex-slaves and African Americans, dating from the end of the American Civil War and the years following. The group has a variety of image styles ranging from cabinet cards to stereoviews to classic photographs. All in fine to very good condition, with expected wear to all. A few areas of toning and foxing, along with some small tears to edges. One image has minor silvering. Including the following:

1. Stereoview, "Plantation Scenes, Picking Cotton. Georgia". Published by W. M. Chase, Baltimore, undated. Part of the "Picturesque Views of Gems of Beauty and Art" series. William Moody Chase was a prolific photographer who issued at least 2,000 stereoviews of the eastern United States during the period 1865-1895.
2. Black and White Photograph of a Black worker transporting cotton. No place, undated. Captioned "Trucking baled Cotton into the Mill. Where the Negro's usefulness in Connect with Cotton ceases."
3. Oval Sepia Toned Photograph of an Elderly Ex-Slave. No place, undated. A moving image of an elderly black woman holding a bundle of logs, dressed in worn clothing. Captioned "An ex-slave woman of Charleston S.C. was a rice-field 'hand' prior to The War."
4. Cabinet Card of a Black Nursemaid. Port Deposit, Maryland, dated July 31, 1904. A photograph of a young black woman pushing the carriage of a white child. Captioned on verso "James Lucius Gerry. His first Photograph taken at Port Deposit, Md July 31st 1904. Age six months."

These images are a unique look at the evolving role that African Americans played in society in the post-Civil War years, including their successes as well as their continuing struggles.
