Description
John Brown's Fort Stereographic Image, "Picturesque Views" Series
Measuring 6.75" x 3.5", No place, undated [Ca. 1870-1873]. A stereoview of John Brown's Fort at Harpers Ferry, Virginia, from the series "Picturesque Views Of all Countries". The dual image depicts three men standing outside the one-story brick guardhouse, with the words "John Brown's Fort" painted over the door archways. On verso is a list of "XLNT VIEWS", detailing the other stereoscopic images in the series. It is this backlist that makes it possible to date the image to after Ca. 1870. The yellow card coloring also was phased out of use by the end of 1873. The card has toning and foxing throughout, with light wear to the corners. Very good.
The building achieved fame when it was John Brown's refuge during his 1859 raid on Harpers Ferry. Brown had planned to capture the armory to supply an army of runaway slaves and abolitionists but was arrested and ultimately hanged for his crimes. The pictured guard house is the only surviving building of the Armory; the others were destroyed during the Civil War. Following the war, it became a popular tourist attraction.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
