Description

A FRENCH BELLE ÉPOQUE GILT AND PATINATED BRONZE FIGURAL TORCHÈRE, 1880s, in the Rococo Revival taste, with a beautifully modeled and cast upper body torso of a sparingly robed classical maiden herm clutching a Pan flute in one hand, and in opposite holding aloft a serpentine foliate rimmed rocaille torch with a later en flammeé frosted glass shade, on a sinuous scrolling acanthus pedestal centering a nicely detailed rocaille pendant within leafy stems, tapering to scrolled "S" form legs adorned with acanthine foliage and raised on curled feet, one bronze stamped "EG / 3059," drilled for gas/electricity, height: 65 1/2", width: 13 3/4", depth: 13". Note: Provenance: Private Collection, Houston, Texas

Condition

Good condition with small scattered scratches, a few old repairs, slightly worn on protruding areas of figure, some loose bronzes, wax residue on torch, frosted glass shade is a replacement, and normal surface buildup in crevices throughout. This was fitted for gas/electrical lighting at one time but has long since been removed.Â Â Simpson Galleries strongly encourages in-person inspection of items by the bidder.
