Pre-Columbian, Maya Territories, Guatemala, Ulua Valley, Late Classic Period, ca. 600 to 900 CE. A delightful pottery dish presenting a flat bottom and shallow basin with thick walls that flare outwards to a broad rim, all sitting upon 4 tab-shaped feet. Adorned in hues of red, orange, beige, and black, the exterior and interior of the beautiful vessel boasts an elaborate decorative program of abstract checkered, steppe, and spiral motifs. The exterior is additionally embellished with 2 applied zoomorphic heads, each accompanied by a pair of paws or hands, protruding from opposite sides of the dish. Minor loss to small area of rim. Repaired from several pieces with restoration and repainting over break lines. Restoration to 1 leg and some areas of rim. Expected nicks and abrasions throughout. Otherwise, very nice with great pigments.
