Description
DESCRIPTION: Berks County, Pensylvania tall case or grandfather's clock. Circa 1780-90.Walnut case with panel base resting on ogee feeet. Narrow waist with fluted corner columns flanking a rectangular single board prospect door with rounded corners and beveled edge. The bonnet with swans neck terminating in ball and flame form finials; central plinth with matching finial. The side of the bonnet with tombstone shaped finials. 30 hour movement with date with a late Federal painted dial. Attached to the inside of the case is the following handwritten note: "This clock originally belonged to Jacob Bender of Healdsburg Township, Berks Co. Pa. His farm was known as the Garden Farm because of its location and fertility. After his death the clock was bought at his ____ sale by Dr. John A. Conrad of Robosonia, PA. It was owned by him during his time as member of the PA legislature. Owing to resources this clock was bought by Dr. J. H. Drawbaugh at a sale of his personal property. Another clock known as the Bechtel clock was purchased by Reilly Fisher. Jacob Bender owned it and died being a very old man. Dr. Conrad had it many years and Dr. Drawbaugh has owned it since 1895. Signed ______ Drawbaugh. Shiresmantown, PA May 2, 1902." Dr. John A. Conrad (1842-1913) was a PA State rep 1871-1873. Dr. Drawbaugh lived in Bowmanstown and was probably of the same family as Daniel Drawbaugh, the noted telephone inventor. MEASUREMENTS: 83" high x 17-1/2" wide x 11" deep. CONDITION: Runs and chimes.
