Jefferson & Madison Signed Land Grant for Heirs of a Deceased Soldier

1p partially printed of vellum, measuring 15" x 8.25", Washington, D.C., dated January 10, 1805. Signed "Th: Jefferson" and countersigned "James Madison" as Secretary of State. The document grants "Samuel Hogg Junior and John Baptist Hogg Heirs at law of Thomas Hogg deceased, who was a Major in the late Army of the United States…four certain tracts of land estimated to contain each One Hundred acres…" The grant has a paper seal adhered at the lower left. Matted and framed with an engraved print of Jefferson to the overall size of 27" x 15". Flattened folds, with uneven toning, spotting, and foxing throughout. Jefferson's signature is nice and large. Madison's signature has faded slightly with age.

The land was granted in pursuance of an act of Congress, entitled, "An act regulating the grants of Land appropriated for Military Services, and for the society of the United Brethren for propagating the gospel among the heathens." Thomas Hogg served in the 1st North Carolina Regiment from 1776 until October 1777, when he was promoted to major and transferred to the 3rd North Carolina Regiment. He saw action at the battles of Monmouth and the Siege of Charleston, and remained a Major until his retirement from the Army in 1783.
