Madison & Monroe Boldly Signed Land Grant
Land Grant dated April 10, 1812, granting Thomas Roberts of Butter County land in Cincinnati. Boldly signed by 4th U.S. President James Madison (1751-1836) as "James Madison" near the center, and also signed by then U.S. Secretary of State and future 5th U.S. President James Monroe (1758-1831) as "Jas Monroe" near the lower left. 9.5" x 15.75". Scattered foxing, stains and missing a large section of the left side including the seal.
The partly printed DS reads in part:
Know Ye, That Thomas Roberts of Butter County having deposited in the Treasury a certificate of the Register of the Land office at Cincinnati whereby it appears that full payment has been made for the South East quarter of section number eight of township number three in range number three east of a meridian line drawn from the great (Not legible) River.
James Madison served two terms in office, between 1809-1817. His successor James Monroe was president between 1817-1825.
