Description
Important Signed President Andrew Jackson (March 15, 1767 – June 8, 1845) Land Grant Dated June 1823 | A very nice original land grant certificate on heavy parchment signed President Andrew Jackson by Andrew Jackson Donelson (August 25, 1799 – June 26, 1871), President Jackson's adopted son and secretary | Important U.S. and Tennessee History | Andrew Jackson Donelson, born in Nashville, Tennessee, was one of the three sons of Samuel and Mary Donelson. Samuel Donelson, Nashville, Tennessee lawyer and landowner, was son of Colonel John Donelson who led emigrants to Middle Tennessee, arriving at the Cumberland settlement on April 24, 1780. The Donelson family became well established in Nashville, and Samuel Donelson's closest friends and business associates included his brother-in-law Andrew Jackson and John Caffey. After Samuel Donelson's death ca. 1804, Andrew Jackson Donelson moved to The Hermitage, the Nashville, Tennessee home of his aunt, Rachel Donelson Jackson, and her husband, Donelson's namesake, future President of the United States Andrew Jackson. Rachel and Andrew Jackson adopted all three Donelson sons, including Andrew. His younger brother, Daniel Smith Donelson, was the Confederate brigadier general after whom Fort Donelson in Tennessee was named. Donelson attended Cumberland College in Nashville. He assisted Jackson's presidential campaigns and served as his private secretary after Jackson won the 1828 presidential election. He returned to Tennessee after the end of Jackson's presidency in 1837 and remained active in local politics. After helping James K. Polk triumph at the 1844 Democratic National Convention, Donelson was appointed by President John Tyler to represent the United States in the Republic of Texas, where Donelson played an important role in the annexation of Texas.
