Description
Who died in Elgin, Kane Co., Illinois in the 77th year of his age having emigrated to the “far west” from Oxford, N.H. in 1838.
Notice the many symbols in this print: the church steeple conveys faith, the intersection of heaven and earth, and the body of Christ; the cross conveys the connection between heaven and earth, the tree of life, and suffering; the weeping willow conveys mourning or grief; and the acanthus leaf conveys heavenly gardens, heaven, immortality, and the fine arts.
Notice the discarded woman's bonnet at the bottom which conveys mourning or grief. Another important part of the grieving process for the Victorian was the epitaph on the gravestone. The one written here states: Blessed are the dead which lie in the Lord from henceforth; yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their laborq and their works follow them. Ink and watercolor on paper 16.5” x 12.5” In original frame.
Exhibited at the Cahoon Museum of American Art, CELEBRATION OF LIFE exhibit- 2011.
