Description
Southeast Asia, Thailand, ca. 19th century CE. A wonderful pottery jar of sizable scale presenting a voluminous body with thick walls that rise to a rounded shoulder, a corseted neck, and a flared rim, all sitting upon a narrow, planar base. Enveloped in lustrous, olive-hued glaze, the impressive vessel is adorned with incised decoration, featuring a series of repeated, vertical dashes across the shoulder above 5 horizontal bands. Note the rich marine encrustations of salt, barnacles, and seashells that naturally embellish the exterior, as well as the sand and shells that fill the interior - all lovely indications that this vessel was likely part of a shipwreck. Size: 12.8" Diameter x 18.3" H (32.5 cm x 46.5 cm)
