Description
Thomas Rose Miles (1844-1916) Monumental oil on canvas set in intricate carved wood frame with gold sheen. Unsigned. Metal plate on bottom center of frame reads Thomas R. Miles. Also, various markings and stamps on verso of frame. Measurements: Painting is 36 inches wide by 24 inches high. Intricate frame measures approximately 45 inches (w) X 32 inches. Miles painting depicts a scene of several ships in rough waters. The ship in forefront is shipwrecked with sailors abandoning the vessel and trying to get to shore. Thomas Rose Miles is best known for his rough water seascape and ship paintings and has been exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists, the Society of British Artists, Royal Academy, the Royal Hiberian Society, amongst others. Two paintings of Miles titled the .Weed gatherers, West coast of Ireland and Morning of the Fair, Roundstone Quay, Connemara sold together for over $70,000 at auction in 2007.
