Ruscha's ten-painting cycle The Course of Empire, inspired by the Jeffersonian layout of the American Pavilion's architecture and by Thomas Cole's painting cycle of the same name, was presented at the 2005 Venice Biennale, and included 5 paintings in color, and 5 in black and white. With a forward by Joan Didion and an essay by Frances Stork.
